Tour of Britain – Stage Three
Irishman Peter Hawkins topped off a day in the breakaway with the ‘Rouleur Combativity Award’ for the stages most aggressive rider and will wear the IG Markets colours of red and white tomorrow.
The day started according to plan with attacks going right from the gun. The entire team were present to ensure everything was covered and it was ‘Paddy Pete’ who made the five man break including, Kristian House (Rapha Condor), Bernie Salzberger (Raleigh) Wesley Kreder (Vaconsoleil) and the current holder of the Yodel Sprinters Jersey, Pete Williams.
The break worked well together despite some tough conditions in the wind and rain throughout the day and gained a lead over 4 minutes. Pete managed to gain some extra points on the last two sprints coming second in both. Team Sky and United Healthcare were dominating the chasing peloton but Pete and the Vaconsoleil rider managed a further dig with 25km to go. They were then joined by Sep Vanmarcke (Garmin) and stayed away right up until the closing stages where Team Sky set up a perfect stage win for Mark Cavendish.
Once again the crowds and support throughout today’s 152.6km route from Jedburgh to Dumfries were unbelievable. Thank you Scotland!!
